While these systems are often seen as low maintenance, they still require regular servicing to remain safe, compliant, and effective. Neglecting maintenance can result in reduced performance, missed faults, and even long-term damage to the building or system.

Safe access and working at height
Accessing pitched roof systems involves more planning than flat roofs due to height and fall risks. Safe access equipment, edge protection, and adherence to HSE guidelines are essential. At PV Plus, our team is trained to work at height and always completes site-specific RAMS documentation before beginning work. On live public buildings such as schools, we coordinate with site teams to ensure minimal disruption.
Roof condition and physical inspection policy
While roof integrity is critical to the long-term success of a solar system, pitched roof inspections can be costly and are not always necessary during routine servicing. As standard, PV Plus does not carry out direct roof-level checks unless concerns arise. This is because accessing the roof safely can involve expensive scaffolding or lifting equipment, and many common issues can be detected via inverter alerts or electrical testing.
However, in line with MCS recommendations, we do advise that full roof inspections are carried out at appropriate intervals, especially if performance drops or the system is ageing. Where we identify concerns during servicing, we can use our drone equipment to conduct a safe, remote visual assessment. If a more detailed inspection is needed, we will advise accordingly. This approach helps avoid unnecessary costs while still protecting the system and ensuring compliance.
Electrical performance and fault testing
A key part of solar maintenance is ensuring the electrical system is operating correctly. On pitched roofs, arrays are often installed across multiple aspects or strings, which makes system-level faults harder to detect without proper tools. During a PV Plus maintenance visit, we check generation performance, inspect the inverter and isolators, and conduct DC and AC testing in line with MCS guidelines. If the system includes remote monitoring, we also review alert history and output trends to identify any performance issues.
Wildlife, environment, and external factors
Pitched roofs are more exposed to nesting birds, rodents, and environmental debris. Cables and connectors can be disturbed or damaged by animals, while moss, leaves, or weathering can reduce system safety and reliability. During servicing, we look for signs of wildlife activity around cable entry points, assess inverter environments for contamination or heat issues, and flag any potential risks.
When should pitched roof systems be maintained?
We recommend annual servicing for all commercial and public sector solar PV systems in line with MCS MIS 3002. More frequent checks may be advised for older systems, sites with higher exposure to wind or wildlife, or systems with no monitoring capability. Reactive servicing is also important following storms, reported faults, or after roofing work.
