PV Plus Strengthens Green Building Commitment Through GRO Membership

At PV Plus, we’re thrilled to announce that we have joined the Green Roof Organisation (GRO). It is the UK’s top authority on green roof standards and sustainable practices. This milestone underscores our commitment to advancing eco-friendly construction and delivering innovative solutions for our clients.

What is GRO?

The Green Roof Organisation (GRO) is a key player in promoting sustainable building practices across the UK. They are the industry’s benchmark for excellence. GRO provides comprehensive guidelines and certifications that ensure high-quality green roof installations. Their work is instrumental in:

  • Establishing industry-wide standards.
  • Encouraging sustainable development.
  • Promoting the integration of eco-friendly solutions in urban planning.

GRO’s dedication to advancing green roof solutions aligns seamlessly with the values of forward-thinking companies striving to make a positive environmental impact.

Why PV Plus joined GRO.

Joining GRO is a natural step in our mission. We aim to lead in sustainable building and environmental construction. By becoming a member, PV Plus reinforces our dedication to:

  • Sustainability Goals: Integrating GRO’s standards into our operations aligns perfectly with our focus on eco-friendly construction and reducing environmental footprints.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with roofing and M&E contractors to deliver advanced green roof solar installations, we value GRO’s commitment to shared expertise and innovation.
  • Industry Leadership: As specialists in green roof solar installations, joining GRO enhances our ability to provide cutting-edge solutions that meet or exceed clients’ expectations.

Excitement around the Living Roof Live Lab.

Seedling growing, at different stages, to represent the Living Roof Live Lab project

PV Plus is particularly excited about one of GRO’s latest initiatives, the Living Roof Live Lab project. This innovative programme, led by Bridgman & Bridgman LLP and The Open University (OU), has received Open Societal Challenges (OSC) funding to construct a state-of-the-art green roof research facility on OU’s Walton Hall campus in Milton Keynes.

The Living Roof Live Lab aims to produce UK-specific data on the ecological benefits of green roofs. These include reducing urban heat, improving energy efficiency, boosting biodiversity, and cutting water runoff. Key contributors include Dr Kadmiel Maseyk, an expert in environmental physiology, and green roof specialist Chris Bridgman. They are joined by a multidisciplinary team from the OU.

This initiative shows that green roofs can aid sustainable urban development and policy-making. It also fosters hands-on learning for students and the community. As a member of GRO, PV Plus takes pride in supporting projects like this. They align with our mission to drive innovation in sustainable construction.

Environmental Impact of Solar PV Systems

Solar PV installations play a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions by generating clean, renewable energy. In 2024, the UK’s electricity generation achieved unprecedented cleanliness, with renewables accounting for a record 45% of the energy mix. This shift contributed to a significant decrease in carbon intensity, dropping from 419 grams of CO₂ per kilowatt-hour in 2014 to 124 grams in 2024.

Environmental Benefits of Green Roofs

Green roofs contribute to environmental sustainability through:

  • Stormwater Management: They can keep up to 80% of runoff. This reduces flood risks and eases urban drainage systems. Green Roofers.
  • Energy Efficiency: Green roofs provide natural insulation. They reduce the need for winter heating and summer cooling. Studies indicate that they can decrease energy consumption by up to 75% during peak cooling periods. DVC Roofing
  • Urban Heat Island Mitigation: Green roofs absorb heat with their vegetation. This lowers temperatures and combats the urban heat island effect. Green Roofers
  • Biodiversity Enhancement: They create habitats for various species, promoting urban biodiversity and ecological balance. DVC Roofing

PV Plus is at the forefront of sustainable building solutions. We combine solar PV systems with green roofs. Our work boosts energy efficiency, conservation, and urban resilience.

A testimonial from a happy partner.

“PV Plus always provide exceptionally high levels of technical knowledge and customer care, which is why we never hesitate to partner with them on our flat and green roof projects. Lawrence Road is a particular example of this, where PV Plus have shown great attention to detail to ensure that the system is well installed and another client is left with peace of mind that their BioSolar system will provide biodiversity, storm water management, and renewable energy for many years to come. “
