Over time, wear and tear, weather exposure, electrical issues or component failures can all lead to reduced performance or, worse, safety risks.

A professional maintenance service should go beyond a quick look at the inverter. At PV Plus, our standard annual maintenance includes:
1. Performance Assessment
- Reviewing generation data against expected output
- Identifying underperformance, shading issues, or signs of degradation
- Checking monitoring platforms (if installed) for alerts or anomalies
2. Electrical Testing
- DC and AC cable checks
- Continuity and insulation resistance testing
- Inverter function tests and firmware updates where applicable
- Verification of safe isolation procedures and labels
3. Visual and Mechanical Inspection
- Checking for loose connections, corrosion, or wear
- Inspecting mounting systems for signs of movement or fatigue
- Examining cable routes and terminations for mechanical damage or UV exposure
- Confirming that isolators, breakers, and surge protection devices are intact
4. Safety and Compliance Checks
- Confirming compliance with MCS MIS 3002 and relevant manufacturer warranties
- Ensuring access routes, signage, and emergency shutoffs are in place
- Reviewing fire safety features in line with RC62 (spacing, containment, and isolation access)
5. Reporting & Recommendations
- Full written report with photos and test results
- List of any remedial actions or future upgrade suggestions
- Certification of service for records and warranty/insurance compliance
What About Solar Panel Cleaning?
Dirty panels = lower output. Especially in urban, coastal, or bird-heavy areas, dirt and debris can significantly reduce generation over time.
While cleaning is important, PV Plus does not offer in-house cleaning services. We recommend engaging a reputable local window cleaning company or specialist contractor who:
- Uses deionised water and soft brushes
- Follows safe working at height practices
- Has experience with solar arrays and appropriate insurance

MCS MIS 3002 Requirements
- Systems must be maintained to ensure safe operation and expected performance
- Evidence of servicing should be retained
- Maintenance should be in line with manufacturer guidance
- Key components (inverters, isolators, DC cabling) should be checked for faults and wear
RC62 Fire Safety Recommendations
- All DC cable routes should be inspected for integrity and proper containment
- Fire breaks (e.g. 1m every 40m on flat roofs) must remain clear
- No obstruction of emergency routes or fire escape access
- String labels, isolator positions and emergency instructions should remain visible and intact

These compact, fire-resistant enclosures are designed to contain and extinguish electrical arcs, reducing the risk of fire. They can also be retrofitted to existing systems as part of our maintenance service for enhanced DC safety and compliance with RC62 recommendations.

How Often Should Commercial Solar PV Be Serviced?
- Annually for most commercial and public sector systems
- Biannually or quarterly for larger or higher-risk sites (e.g. schools, MOD buildings, or shared roofs)
- Ad hoc callouts in response to faults, visual concerns, or storm damage
- After major roofing works or inverter replacements
